Prins Petfoods in Veenendaal, the Netherlands, started to train coaches who can help with everyday matters concerning pets. Among other things, The Prins Health Coach can provide individual counseling and advice on matters such as training, behaviour, nutrition, health, animal welfare and safety.

The coaches provide knowledge in a personal and tailored fashion. They help pet owners to make the right decisions to optimize the well-being of their pet and to consult the right professionals in time where necessary: prevention through optimal guidance. Because of his/her broad background, a coach is an easy to reach advisor who can offer extra help to solve practical problems together with pet owners and/or with the help of veterinarian partners.

Part of the family

Animal welfare, spreading knowledge and good service always come first at PRINS Petfoods, who specializes in producing 100% natural dog and cat food. As a Dutch family business, Prins likes to share the family feeling with pet owners. The Prins Health Coaches play an important role in this. Their efforts contribute to an optimal physical and mental health of dogs and cats and a strong relationship between humans and animals.

Training program

The first Health Coach pilot launch was in 2018. In order to obtain and maintain a broad base of knowledge, all coaches attend a training program taught by several specialists. Everyone with affinity for and knowledge of pets can apply for this program: groomers, behavioral experts, breeders, veterinary assistants and employees of pet shops, animal shelters and animal welfare organizations who want to improve their professional skills and like to distinguish themselves. As part of the selection procedure, after evaluation of the application, eligible applicants will be invited for a personal intake to assess their level of experience and education.

Higher level

The Prins Health Coach project is part of a series of ambitious plans in which Prins aims to bring education and knowledge to an even higher level, both nationally and internationally. This is already materialized through the Prins CareTeam, EduPet Education and the very successful EduVet Veterinary Training Centre. New generation to take the lead at Prins |

to work on an even higher level of quality, education and animal welfare

Lies Verkade and Wil Mulders will step down as board members of Prins Petfoods as of February 1st, 2021 to make way for a new generation of business leadership. They will remain closely associated with the family business as shareholders and advisers. Business management will be transferred to Mariska van Gelder, Marlou Mulders and Gertjan Willems.

Belonging to the new generation of business leadership, Marlou Mulders has final commercial responsibility. Mariska van Gelder has final responsibility for experience concepts such as the Prins Plaza animal welfare center and the Prins Visitor Center and Gertjan Willems for operations, development and education.

Brand pillars

Prins is developing rapidly and fully focused on the expansion of the three brand pillars: Products, Education and Experience. The new management will also be responsible for the educational labels which Prins Petfoods has launched in recent years, such as EduPet Education, the Martin Gaus Academy, the Cat Academy and the Rabbit Academy. This year the Herp Academy and Horse Academy will be added.

Third generation

Dirk Johannes Verkade, founder of Prins Petfoods in 1963, together with the current management laid a solid foundation for the core values that the company propagates every day: increasing the well-being of pets by sharing knowledge, producing high-quality 100% natural dog and cat food and providing inspiring meeting places for both pet owners and professionals. His granddaughter Mariska van Gelder is the third generation who will be at the helm of the company.

With great pride

Lies Verkade and Wil Mulders have led Prins for more than twenty years. ‘It is time to hand over the baton’, they say. ‘In recent decades, we have contributed with great pride to the growth of the brand and putting the pillars nutrition, education and experience on the map. It is a well-considered decision to take this new step. Together with the family, we have every confidence that the new management can take Prins to an even higher level.’

Prins Petfoods, together with the Flevoland animal shelter and the Martin Gaus pet hotel in Lelystad, the Netherlands, is introducing the Pet Parents plan to reduce elderly loneliness.

The Pets Parents plan enables seniors to adopt and take in a shelter dog or cat for a fixed weekly contribution. To lower the threshold for enjoying a pet as much as possible, Prins offers the elderly maximum care. This is done by giving help and advice with nutrition and health and by re-taking the animal in case the Pet Parent passes away.

Win-win

Research shows that pet owners are not only happier, but also healthier, both physically and mentally. Pets provide more exercise, lower stress levels and more engagement with other people through the activities of the Pet Parents meeting center. The conscious choice for shelter animals that need a new home creates a win-win situation. Of course the dogs and cats will be screened and selected before entering the Pet Parents plan.

All-inclusive

The animals available for adoption will be mentioned on the website of the Flevoland animal shelter and the Martin Gaus pet hotel. Participation in the Pets Parents plan costs 10 euros per week for a cat and 15 euros per week for a dog. This includes all medical costs, food and residence in the animal hotel in case the Pet Parent is temporarily not able to take care for the animal. Pet Parents also receive free access to educational activities.

Acquisition Dutch Cats Academy leads to a broad range of courses

By taking over the Cats Academy, or Katten Academie in Dutch, the Martin Gaus Academy in Lelystad, the Netherlands, Prins Petfoods can now offer a broad range of cat courses in the Netherlands. It all fits in the picture the Prins family philosophy which revolves around producing the best 100% natural dog and cat food and the active contribution to and promotion of animal welfare and sharing knowledge.

The Cats Academy was founded by Sonja van Leeuwen, who sought affiliation with Prins to ensure the growth of professional education, and thus a better understanding of cat behavior and guidance for cat owners, for the future.

Knowledge and understanding

The Cats Academy currently offers education, seminars and refresher courses for cat behavioral therapists and cat groomers and provides information on themes like cat-friendly houses. The Cats Academy also combines knowledge with fun through the organization of meetings and gatherings for cat lovers, such as a Cat Ladies High Tea.

Academy Quality label

The combination with the Martin Gaus Quality Label and the new learning program of the Martin Gaus Academy must ensure that the knowledge of the Cats Academy remains at a high and current level and becomes even more visible to consumers. Founder Sonja van Leeuwen will continue her work for both the Cats Academy and the Martin Gaus Academy as a teacher, mentor and student advisor.
